Student jailed for hitting college senate chairman

KAJANG: Former New Era College student Abraham Lim Ken Zhi, who hit college senate chairman Dr Yap Sin Tian, was jailed for two days and fined RM6,000 in default one month’s jail.

Lim, who was sent to Kajang prison to serve his jail term, was charged at the Kajang magistrate’s court Section 325 of the Penal Code carries a maximum seven years’ jail and a fine. Lim’s parents paid the fine.

He pleaded guilty to hitting Dr Yap, 69 , at the college’s convocation hall in Jalan Bukit, Kajang, at 10.10 am on Jan 11.

The youth, from Ulu Tiram in Johor, appeared at the court at 8.30am yesterday. He was accompanied by his parents and about 10 relatives and friends.

While waiting for his case to be heard, he was seen clasping his hands and glancing at his parents.

When magistrate Nurdiana Mohd Nazari said she would like to hear Lim’s plea, the youth, clad in a light blue shirt, dark blue tie and black trousers, remained silent with his head bowed.

A minute later, Nurdiana asked the youth again to appeal for himself, saying she found him to be a very smart person after reading some documents tendered by his lawyer Wong Kian Kheong.

Lim then answered in a soft tone: “I feel very sorry for my parents.”
